Until yesterday, CBD was an unknown word for me. Well, I knew it had a link with cannabis and that it could be use as medical treatment but to be honest, I had never really read up on the subject. So I took a look at the issue to shed some light on the legal grey area.
But first, what it's all about ?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active component of cannabis known as hemp or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It's a substance that's listed as a narcotic, and its use is strictly controlled by the authorities due to its low THC content.
However, the authorities would like to ban its presence in e-liquids, lest the shops be seen as what they are not: resellers of illegal substances.
What do you think about using CBD in e-liquids?
If we look at today's society, people who want to stop smoking tend to turn to electronic cigarettes. E-cigarette shops are becoming the first direct competitors of tobacconists. This new practice is enabling many people to reduce or stop smoking altogether. Vape is seen as an effective and proven alternative. Consumers can still benefit from the presence of nicotine dosed according to their dependency, and from the sensation of absorbing and exhaling "smoke".
But CBD has no psychotropic effect, as Professor Nicolas Simon, President of the French National Association for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Addiction, points out. It is only a "chemical substance that activates receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems, organs and the immune system". It is said to have anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant properties, and to be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and certain cancers.
Allowing people to consume CBD could perhaps reduce the use of drugs in the treatment of certain illnesses, addictions or even depressive states. Over-the-counter or prescription? It already exists in some countries, but it's still a major health and social debate, giving rise to many positions and points of view.
