A real phenomenon among young people, highly controversial and decried, what's really going on with puff?

A puff, what is it ?

The puff is a disposable electronic cigarette. It consists of a non-removable lithium battery and 1 to 2 ml of eliquid, often extremely sweet. Very easy to use, all you have to do is inhale to start it up. It holds around 600 to 700 puffs, between 0mg/ml nicotine and 20mg/ml nicotine.

Although it could be a way to quit smoking, it is the subject of much controversy. Which ones? Why is it so decried?

Marketing Strategy

The first point raised was the marketing focus on young and very young teenagers. Colorful packaging and very sweet and fruity flavors are chosen with this in mind.

In fact, a survey was carried out by Alliance contre le Tabac in collaboration with the BVA polling institute. They questioned young people aged 13 to 16 about their perceptions and use of puff. The results are very worrying. Marketing aimed at them works wonders. Indeed, 13% of them have already tried it. What's more, despite the law prohibiting any promotion or advertising of tobacco and vaping products, 30% of teenagers say they felt like trying the product after seeing influencers on social networks talking about it.

What's more, manufacturers are surfing this trend, like WPuff®, which saw its website and Instagram account shut down in September 2022 for illegal advertising in favor of vaping.

This popularity among young people is alarming. In fact, 9% of them have already bought one, despite the fact that sales are forbidden to minors.

Should we blame marketing or sellers ?

Devastating ecological impact

Puffs are an ecological nightmare. Every component of this disposable electronic cigarette, from the lithium batteries to the plastic packaging, is neither recycled nor recyclable.

The production cycle is highly polluting (lithium extraction, transport, packaging, non-recyclable disposable battery cartridge...). Add to this the fact that, once empty, they can't be thrown away just anywhere.

What's more, lithium batteries are designed to be recharged many times, so in this case, a single use and garbage can...

A-Not-so attractive price

It's not at all economical. Between 6 and 10€ for 600 to 700 puffs or 2 days' use (equivalent to about 2 packs of combustion cigarettes).

The calculation is quick over a month:

> 30 packks of cigarettes a month = 300€
