The electronic cigarette’s resistor

28/06/2022

The resistor is the main consumable of your electronic cigarette. But what is it exactly and how does it work ?

  • 1. What is a resistor ?

A resistor is made up of materials that opposes to an electronical current. The electrons present in the current are in motion and circulate in the electric circuit. The resistance corresponds to the capacity of a component to oppose itself to electric current and therefore turns the kinetic energy of an electronic currant into thermal energy. The resistor creates and distributes heat to the tank - also called clearomizer - through a coil stuffed with cotton wick.

  • 2. How does work your resistor ?

The resistor is activated by the battery of your electronic cigarette. When you push the button to vape, an electronic current circulates to the resistor and makes it work. The energy of the electronical current is turned into thermal energy by the resistor, which heats the resistor and consequently the e-liquid too. Once heated, MPVG and VP vaporize and smoke/steam is created. And yes, you do vape !

  • 3. The different values of a resistor

First of all, the value of a resistor expresses in ohm. It exists different resistor's values. The value swings between 0.1 ohm and 2.5 ohm. The value of your resistor is to be picked depending on the power of your electronic cigarette, this one expresses in watts, and also depending on your battery voltage.
Be careful ! It is essential to properly choose your resistor. If you install a small resistor on an electronic cigarette, you won't be able to use too much power, as this would damage or even burn it. A too high power burns the cotton wick stuffing the coil and leads to an unpleasant burnt taste when you inhale. .

Valeurs de résistance

Note that the value of the resistor plays a major role in the vapor and flavor reproduction of your e-liquid.

  • 4. Resistor and PG/VG rate of your e-liquid consistency

Added to the value of the resistor and the power of the electronic cigarette, you have to take into account the mono propylene glycol (PG) and vegetal glycerin (VG) rate of your e-liquid to properly choose you resistor. You e-liquid is composed with PG.VG, flavoring and nicotine, if you choose to add it to this liquid in mg/ml. You will have to add one or several bottle of nicotine to obtain the wanted dosage. The PG/VG rate has a strong influence of the flavor rendering and on the produced steam. If your e-liquid is richer in PG then you will feel more the hit and the flavor. The steam will be less thick and the recommended resistor will have a value higher or equal to 1 ohm. If your e-liquid is richer in VG, the steam will be thicker. Moreover, its more viscous texture asks more work to the resistor, you will have to choose one with more power and therefore lower in ohm.

In other words, the more your e-liquid has PG, the less the resistor will be powerful, and on the contrary, the more there is VG, the more the value of the resistor will be close to 0.

  • 5. Kind of nicotine and resistor value

Concerning the traditional nicotine of your e-liquid, you must adapt it to the value of your resistor, or adapt the value to the quantity of nicotine in mg/ml. Indeed, the more the resistor has a low value, the more the quantity of vaporized e-liquid in each puff will be high and therefore the quantity of nicotine will be high.
About an e-liquide with salt nicotine, it is recommended to choose a resistor with a value above 1 ohm because the nicotine is the salt nicotine is absorbed quicker by the organism. A resistor with a value lower than 1 ohm would provoke an overdosage reaction.

  • 6. Kind of resistor for a CBD e-liquid

E-liquids with cannabidiol (CBD) need an adapted material to be used. Those e-liquids are not made to create lots of steam and are rich in PG. It is recommended to choose a resistor with a high value (higher than 1 ohm) with a low power of use. The high rate of mono propylene glycol is necessary to avoir the crystallization of CBD.

Remember to change your resistor about every 15 to 20 days, or if you notice the cotton of your resistor turning black. You can find a wide range of resistors on our site at unbeatable prices.
