E-liquid and electronic cigarette on a plane: our advice for you

When you're on vacation, we often hear questions about whether you can take your electronic cigarette on a plane, where to put your e-liquid, how to pack it, and how much to take with you so you don't run out when you get there.

The regulations concerning e-liquids on airplanes are as follows:

- In the cabin, you are allowed to carry with you bottles that do not exceed 100 ml, as for other types of liquids.

- Be sure to place them in a transparent plastic pouch (e.g. zip-lock freezer bag).

- And don't forget that the total authorized limit for all liquids is 1L, whether e-liquids, cosmetics or other products.

- If you wish to take your e-liquids into the hold, you must also take with you vials of less than 100ml in plastic sleeves.

It's important to keep your e-liquid vials upright and well-packaged, otherwise they may leak, even when new, due to the pressure produced on the plane during the flight.

As far as e-cigarettes are concerned, in the past some have been known to self-power in suitcases, prompting the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) to ban them from the hold, as it's not possible to measure them in the event of a problem or fire declaration.

That said, your e-cigarette is allowed in the cabin, provided you comply with certain rules:

- Of course, you can't use your e-cigarette without triggering the smoke detectors.

- Batteries must be kept in their original packaging or insulated.

- It is forbidden to recharge your vape during a flight.

The pressure in the cabin can have the same effect on the e-cigarette as it does on the e-liquid vials, causing your clearomizer to leak.

This is by no means a technical fault. Make sure you keep your e-cigarette upright if your clearomizer has a top-mounted airflow, or keep it upside down if your clearomizer has a bottom-mounted airflow, to remedy this problem.

Finally, we advise you to find out about the e-cigarette policy of the country you're visiting, to avoid unpleasant surprises!
